Guru H.A Rao warns of the misuse of yoga meditation (Raja Yoga), the stage after physical yoga (Hatha Yoga).
He says yoga aims for both a healthy body and a healthy mind, but should one delve deeply into Raja Yoga, he should seek a competent instructor to guide.
Raja Yoga is so potent that should one deviate from its benign and noble aim, it could prove futile and even disastrous.

However, he says, if Raja Yoga is done in the right way, one can have a healthy and fulfilling life without illnesses and hang-ups.
He concedes that there have been reports of paranormal occurrences, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition in certain states of meditation.
There have also been cases of the student who told his master that deep in meditation, he saw a great white light.
Guru Rao says when the meditator falls into the trap of sidetracks such as the search for visions of flashing lights or for extra-sensory phenomena, or for high ecstatic states, he should ignore them and get on with the process of producing inner development by concentrating on the breathing.
He spoke of how certain deviants meditated and perfected the art of levitation.
“It is of no use and is just a side effect of the process to enlightenment. If a person dwells on such side effects, he will not be able to progress further in his mental development. Eventually, he may end up at the side show to make money and finally the special powers will disappear altogether.
“Anyway, such cases are rare and on the whole, Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga together will certainly lead one to a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.”
